HPP HHMI Award Lunch 2012

HPP Celebrates Director’s HHMI First International Early Career Scientist Award

HPP students, laboratory staff and clinic staff gathered at Coastlands on the Ridge on the 24th of February to celebrate Scientific Director, Professor Thumbi Ndung’u’s, prestigious HHMI First International Early Career Scientist award in style. Professor Ndung’u was unaware of the true purpose of the function, which he was led to believe was simply a party held to kick off the start of the year and to celebrate the success of HPP during 2011.

Representatives from the HPP laboratory and HPP clinic site at Prince Mshiyeni Memorial Hospital each said a few words to congratulate Professor Ndung’u on his award. Professor Bruce Walker, Director of the Ragon Institute of MGH, MIT and Harvard, and a co-founder of the HIV Pathogenesis Programme, who was visiting Durban from Boston at the time of the function, was also there to honour Professor Ndung’u’s achievement. HPP members all chipped in to buy Professor Ndung’u an engraved travel-sized Bible, which he will be able to take with him on his work-related travels. He was also presented with a framed plaque which now adorns the corridor at HPP.

The HPP clinic staff then entertained the guests with their beautifully sung and choreographed renditions of a few African songs. Guests then enjoyed a delicious banquette-style lunch and selection of desserts provided by Coastlands.

Congratulations to Professor Ndung’u on his outstanding achievement!! We are very proud of you.
